From Challenge to Change: How My Wife's Overlap Syndrome Inspired Nature Coast Apothecary's Mission to Repair Skin, Naturally
Sometimes the most meaningful work comes from watching someone you love face the hardest challenges. For my wife, that challenge was overlap syndrome—a rare autoimmune condition that left her skin barrier severely compromised, painful, and seemingly beyond repair. What started as our desperate search for relief became the foundation of Nature Coast Apothecary and our science-backed approach to barrier repair through botanical oils.
This is the story of how her struggle led to our mission: creating skincare that works with your skin's biology, not against it.
The Breaking Point: When Her Skin Barrier Failed
Overlap syndrome is a rare autoimmune condition that combines features of multiple connective tissue diseases. For my wife, one of the most debilitating symptoms was severe skin barrier dysfunction. Her skin became:
- Chronically dry, tight, and painful
- Extremely sensitive to everything—products, weather, even water
- Prone to cracking, bleeding, and constant inflammation
- Unable to retain moisture no matter what she applied
- Reactive to most commercial skincare products
The medical treatments helped manage the autoimmune aspects, but nothing addressed the fundamental problem: her skin barrier was broken, and it needed the raw materials to repair itself.
To understand what was happening to her skin, we dove deep into dermatological research about how skin actually works and what it needs to function properly.
The Research: Understanding Barrier Repair at a Molecular Level
Through countless hours of research, we discovered something crucial: your skin barrier is made up of a lipid matrix consisting of ceramides (50%), cholesterol (25%), and fatty acids (25%). When this matrix is compromised—whether by autoimmune disease, harsh products, or environmental stress—your skin can't hold onto moisture or protect itself from irritants.
Here's the key insight that changed everything: Your skin doesn't need you to apply pre-formed ceramides—it needs the building blocks to make its own.
Those building blocks are essential fatty acids, specifically:
- Linoleic Acid (Omega-6): A direct precursor to ceramide 1, essential for barrier structure and function
- Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega-3): Powerful anti-inflammatory properties, supports ceramide synthesis
- Oleic Acid (Omega-9): Enhances penetration and supports overall lipid barrier integrity
We learned about this science on our journey, and now we share it on our Power of Plant Oils page so others can understand how botanical oils truly work.
The Experiment: Formulating Our First Body Oil
Armed with this knowledge, I started experimenting with botanical oils rich in these essential fatty acids. I wasn't looking to create a business—I just wanted my wife's skin to stop hurting.
I carefully selected oils based on their fatty acid profiles:
- Rosehip Seed Oil: High in both linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, perfect for barrier repair
- Hemp Seed Oil: Rich in linoleic acid, lightweight and non-comedogenic
- Chia Seed Oil: Exceptionally high in omega-3 fatty acids for inflammation
- Sea Buckthorn Oil: Packed with omega-7 and antioxidants for healing
- Evening Primrose Oil: Contains GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) for anti-inflammatory benefits
The first blend I created was what would eventually become Satin Coast Body Oil—a carefully balanced formula rich in omega-3 fatty acids designed for intensive barrier repair. You can see the complete fatty acid breakdown of this formula on our science page.
The Transformation: When Her Skin Started to Heal
Within two weeks of using our botanical oil blend on damp skin after every shower, she noticed changes:
- Week 1-2: Less tightness and pain, reduced sensitivity
- Week 3-4: Skin felt softer, held moisture better, fewer cracks
- Week 6-8: Significant reduction in inflammation and redness
- Week 12+: Her skin barrier was noticeably stronger, more resilient, and far less reactive
For the first time in years, her skin felt comfortable. Not perfect—autoimmune conditions don't disappear—but manageable, functional, and no longer a source of constant pain.
The difference wasn't magic. It was science. By providing her skin with the essential fatty acids it needed, we were supporting its natural ability to synthesize ceramides and rebuild its barrier from within.
From Personal Solution to Nature Coast Apothecary
Friends and family noticed the change in her skin and asked what she was using. When we explained our botanical oil formulation, they wanted to try it. Then their friends wanted to try it. What started as a personal experiment became a mission: to help others with compromised skin barriers find relief through science-backed botanical skincare.
That's how Nature Coast Apothecary was born—not from a business plan, but from lived experience and a deep understanding of what damaged skin actually needs to heal.
Our Philosophy: Science-Backed, Barrier-First Skincare
Everything we create at Nature Coast Apothecary is guided by three core principles:
1. Fatty Acid Profiles Matter More Than Marketing
We don't choose oils because they're trendy or exotic. We select them based on their specific fatty acid composition and how those fatty acids support barrier repair and ceramide synthesis. Every product is formulated with intention.
Learn more about our approach on our Ingredient Benefits at a Glance page, or dive deep into our complete ingredient database:
- Ingredients A - Including Alpha-Linolenic Acid, Argan Oil, Avocado Oil
- Ingredients B - Including Bakuchiol, Borage Oil
- Ingredients C - Including Ceramides, Chia Seed Oil, Coconut Oil
- Ingredients D-K - Including Evening Primrose Oil, Hemp Seed Oil
- Ingredients L-P - Including Linoleic Acid, Oleic Acid, Omega Fatty Acids
- Ingredients Q-S - Including Rosehip Seed Oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil
- Ingredients T-Z
2. Work With Your Skin's Biology, Not Against It
Your skin is incredibly intelligent. Given the right building blocks, it knows how to repair itself. Our job isn't to force change with harsh actives—it's to provide the essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants your skin needs to do what it does naturally: maintain a healthy barrier.
3. Transparency in Formulation
We believe you deserve to know exactly what you're putting on your skin and why. That's why we've created detailed science pages for each of our body oil formulations, breaking down the fatty acid profiles and explaining how each oil contributes to barrier health.
Our Product Line: Formulated for Different Skin Needs
While our original formula became Satin Coast Body Oil, we quickly realized that different skin types and concerns need different fatty acid ratios. That's why we've developed a complete collection.

Facial Oils - Targeted Barrier Repair for Your Face:
The same principles that healed her body skin apply to facial care, but facial skin requires more refined formulations:
Luna Luxe Night Facial Oil
Fragrance-free bakuchiol blend for sensitive facial skin. Perfect for nighttime barrier repair without irritation.
Radiant Renewal Facial Oil
Bakuchiol and berry seed oils for daytime radiance and barrier support.
Clear Confidence Anti-Acne Facial & Body Oil
High in linoleic acid, specifically formulated for acne-prone skin. Research shows acne-prone skin is often deficient in linoleic acid, leading to thick sebum that clogs pores.
Cleansing - Gentle Barrier Protection:
Harsh cleansers strip your barrier, undoing repair efforts. We formulated cleansing products that clean effectively while supporting barrier health:
Melt Away Cleansing Balm
Seven botanical oils that dissolve makeup and impurities without stripping. Oil dissolves oil—the gentlest cleansing method.
Bentonite Clay Cleansing Balm
Detoxifying face cleanser combining clay with nourishing oils for deep cleansing without dryness.
Moisturizers - Sealing in Your Barrier Repair:
Radiance Revival Hyaluronic Facial Cream
Apply after facial oil to seal in the fatty acids and provide water-based hydration with hyaluronic acid.
Botanical Moisturizing Lotion
Five plant oils in a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula for daily body moisture.
Whipped Body Butter
Rich shea butter, mango butter, and cocoa butter create an occlusive barrier. Layer over body oil for maximum winter protection or intensive barrier repair.
Complete Sets:
Botanical Facial Skincare Set
Cleanse, brighten, and restore with our three essential facial products. A complete barrier repair routine in one set.
The Routine That Changed Her Skin (And Can Change Yours)
This is the exact routine my wife uses to manage her overlap syndrome skin:
Morning:
- Rinse face with lukewarm water (no cleanser—don't over-strip)
- Apply 3-4 drops of Radiant Renewal Facial Oil to damp skin
- Seal with Radiance Revival Hyaluronic Facial Cream
- Apply SPF 30+ (barrier protection includes sun protection)
Evening:
- Oil cleanse with Melt Away Cleansing Balm
- Optional: Gentle foaming cleanser (she skips this if her skin feels dry)
- Apply 4-5 drops of Luna Luxe Night Facial Oil to damp skin
- Seal with hyaluronic cream
- For extra dry areas, add one more drop of facial oil as a sleeping mask
After Shower (Body):
- Pat skin until just damp (don't dry completely)
- Apply Satin Coast Body Oil generously to damp skin
- For very dry areas or winter, layer Whipped Body Butter on top
The key: Apply oil to damp skin. Water provides hydration; oil seals it in and delivers the fatty acids your skin needs for ceramide synthesis.
Beyond Products: Education and Empowerment
Nature Coast Apothecary isn't just about selling products—it's about empowering you to understand your skin and make informed choices. That's why we've created extensive educational resources:

Living With Autoimmune Skin: What We've Learned
Her overlap syndrome hasn't disappeared. Autoimmune conditions are chronic, and her skin will always require extra care. But here's what has changed:
- Her skin barrier is strong enough to protect her from daily environmental stress
- She rarely experiences the painful cracking and bleeding that once defined her days
- Her skin can tolerate normal activities—swimming, sun exposure (with SPF), temperature changes
- Flares are less frequent and less severe
- She has a routine that works, grounded in science, not guesswork
Most importantly, we've learned that damaged skin barriers—whether from autoimmune disease, eczema, over-exfoliation, harsh products, or environmental stress—can heal when given the right support.
Our Commitment to You
At Nature Coast Apothecary, we're committed to:
- Science-backed formulations based on how skin actually functions
- Complete transparency about ingredients and why we use them
- Quality over trends - we formulate based on fatty acid profiles, not marketing hype
- Education - empowering you to understand your skin and make informed choices
- Accessibility - effective barrier repair shouldn't require a luxury budget
Your Barrier Repair Journey Starts Here
Whether you're dealing with autoimmune skin issues like my wife was, chronic eczema, over-exfoliated skin, or just persistent dryness, the solution is the same: give your skin the essential fatty acids it needs to synthesize ceramides and rebuild its barrier.
Start with one product—a body oil or facial oil based on your primary concern. Apply it to damp skin consistently for at least 6-8 weeks. Your skin needs time to synthesize new ceramides and rebuild its lipid matrix.
