What if your skin didn't need a $90 serum — just the right oil?

Mature skin has specific needs: it craves deeper moisture, a little more help feeling soft and supple, and ingredients that absorb beautifully rather than sit on top. The good news is that nature has been making the perfect answer for thousands of years. Cold-pressed plant oils are rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants — in forms that feel beautifully compatible with skin.

Each of the seven oils below has a meaningful body of published research behind it. We've kept this article in plain language — but if you'd like to read the science, we link to the peer-reviewed sources throughout. We also have a deeper research overview available for those who want to go further: Carrier Oils & Fatty Acids: Research Overview →

Here are seven carrier oils that do serious work for mature skin, and why we use them in our handcrafted products at Nature Coast Apothecary.

1. Argan Oil

The One That Does It All

Argan oil is the gold standard for a reason. Lightweight enough to wear every day, rich enough to make a real difference, it absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling soft without any greasy residue. It's packed with vitamin E and skin-loving fatty acids that help skin feel moisturized and conditioned — especially welcome as skin tends to feel drier over time.

2. Rosehip Seed Oil

A Botanical Favorite for Brighter-Looking Skin

Rosehip oil has a cult following for good reason — it's one of the few plant oils that visibly brightens skin and helps smooth the look of fine lines over time. It's naturally rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, plus carotenoids that give it that warm golden hue. Its high linoleic acid content (47–50%) makes it one of the most linoleic-dominant carrier oils available — and linoleic acid is a key fatty acid that skin relies on to feel its best.

Tip: Keep rosehip oil away from heat and light to get the most out of it — we always package ours in amber bottles.

3. Pomegranate Seed Oil

The Antioxidant Powerhouse

Pomegranate seed oil is one of the most unique oils in the botanical world — and mature skin loves it. It's the only plant source of punicic acid (omega-5), a rare fatty acid with notable antioxidant qualities and a rich, nourishing feel that suits skin exposed to daily environmental factors.

Pomegranate seed oil also contains naturally occurring plant compounds that make it a popular choice in mature skin formulas. It absorbs beautifully and layers well with other oils, making it a standout ingredient in our more advanced facial formulas.

4. Jojoba

The One That Mimics Your Skin

Here's something most people don't know: jojoba isn't technically an oil at all — it's a liquid wax. And that matters because the wax your skin naturally produces (called sebum) looks remarkably similar to jojoba at a molecular level. That's why jojoba absorbs so smoothly and never feels heavy or pore-clogging.

It's also one of the most stable ingredients you can use — it has a long shelf life and plays well with every other oil and ingredient. Jojoba is a well-studied ingredient appreciated for its compatibility with skin and its conditioning, moisturizing feel. Researchers have noted that jojoba wax forms an efficient moisture-retaining layer on skin — you can read that study here.

It's our go-to base for blending, and it works beautifully for mature skin that's simultaneously dry in some areas and oily in others.

5. Avocado Oil

Deep Nourishment for Seriously Dry Skin

If your skin is very dry, a little rough, or just looks tired and dull, avocado oil is worth knowing about. It's one of the richest, most nourishing plant oils available, packed with vitamins A, D, and E plus natural lecithin that supports a deeply moisturized, conditioned skin feel.

A wonderful addition to an evening skincare ritual. Avocado oil is a well-regarded ingredient in botanical skincare, appreciated for its rich, nourishing feel — and it's especially lovely in night formulas and intensive body oils. The 27-study PubMed review of vegetable oils includes avocado among the oils with meaningful published research behind them.

6. Sea Buckthorn Oil

The Bright Orange Powerhouse

Sea buckthorn is one of those ingredients that looks alarming in the bottle — it's a deep, vivid orange — but does remarkable things for the skin. It's the richest plant source of omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), a fatty acid naturally present in skin and a popular ingredient in mature skin formulas.

Sea buckthorn is appreciated in botanical skincare for its rich carotenoid and vitamin C and E content, and its association with a more hydrated, radiant-looking complexion. It's a vibrant, nutrient-rich addition to formulas designed for mature, dry-feeling skin. Curious about the research? This research-informed review covers the published studies on sea buckthorn and skin.

We use it at a carefully calibrated level in our formulas — enough to deliver its remarkable feel without turning you orange.

7. Evening Primrose Oil

The Conditioning Oil for Sensitive Mature Skin

If your mature skin runs sensitive, reactive, or easily uncomfortable — especially over time — evening primrose oil is worth knowing about. It contains a special fatty acid called GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), which is popular in mature skin formulas, particularly for skin that tends to feel dry or sensitive.

Evening primrose is a popular choice for mature skin routines, especially for skin that tends to feel drier or more sensitive over time. It's appreciated for its soothing, conditioning feel on skin.

We blend evening primrose with other oils rather than using it alone — it works best as part of a thoughtfully crafted formula.
